Aldwych Theatre

The popular London Westend theatre, Aldwych is positioned at 49, Aldwych, London WC2B 4DF. In the year 1905, the Aldwych Theatre was constructed. Year 1982 marked acquiring of Aldwych theatre by the Nederlander Organization by the Royal Shakespeare Company. The latter owned for almost 21 years.

 During the era 2000, the theatre was known for some of the chartbusting musicals such as Fame, Dancing in the Streets and Dirty Dancing. The latter went on becoming the longest running show, as it ran for almost five years at the Aldwych,

The theatre has hosted some of the spectacular productions and witnessed performances from some of the notable actors such as Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard in England, A Streetcar Named Desire featuring Vivien Leigh, Tom Stoppard’s Jumpers, Hapgood and Indian Ink featuring Felicity Kendall, Tom and Clem featuring Sir Michael Gabon and Alec McCowen and Amy’s View with Dame Judi Dench.

In the recent years, Aldwych theatre hosted some magnificent productions such as Irving Berlin’s Top Hat as well as Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies both based on Hilary Mantel’s award winning books. The theatre also hosted currently the Olivier award winning Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

The opulent Aldwych Theatre is positioned on the large stretch of road known as the Aldwych. The venue is abode to both the Aldwych and Novello Theatres. The lively cobbled streets of Covent Garden is located at a nearby distance from the theatre. Interestingly, most of the pillared and whitewashed buildings that are alongside the street are from early 20th century. Other key highlights of the London Westend are The National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery as they are located at a nearby distance from the theatre. The venue also features huge range of restaurants and bars in accordance with your budgets.

If you are planning to visit the Aldwych theatre then no need to worry, as the theatre is located at an easily accessible location. You can visit the theatre via tube, as the nearest station to the theatre is Covent Garden on the Piccadilly line. Aldwych is located at a distance of 5-10 minute walk. Charing Cross mainline train station is at a nearby distance. You can access on the Northern or Bakerloo lines. You can also board bus numbers 1, 4, 11, 13, 15, 68 and 98 all stop near the theatre. You can also hire a taxi or drive your own car as the nearest NCP car park is at Drury Lane/Parker Street, or there are meters outside the theatre.

In the traditional Georgian design, theatre is constructed and have the similar style to the Novello It is spread across three levels, the lower stalls are build underground, with the Dress Circle at street level.
