Savoy Theatre

The popular London Westend theatre, Savoy Theatre is running the blockbuster show 9 to 5 Musical with packed houses. The stunning theatre is designed by C I Phipps and decorated by Collinson & Locke. The theatre is regarded as the most beautifully fitted theatre in Europe. In the year 1881, the popular theatre made its grand debut with a transfer from the Opera Comique of Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera Patience.

Impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte wanted to build his own theatre to stage the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, which leads to the construction of Savoy Theatre! During that time, Savoy Theatre earned immense popularity as the first public building in the world which was lit by Incandescent electric lights.

The Victorian auditorium was demolished in June 1929 and 135 days later Rupert D’Oyly Carte built a stunning palace. It was truly a spell binding beauty of modernism which was built with the designed by one of the renowned architects of that time  Frank Tugwell whereas decorative designs by Basil Ionides. In October 1929, the theatre was reopned with a revival of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers. It was designed by Charles Ricketts and conducted by Dr Malcolm Sargent.

In the current times, Savoy Theatre London is in association with the Ambassador Theatre Group. The outstanding association has hosted some wonderful modern productions such as Take That musical Never Forget. Some of the popular London shows like Legally Blonde made its debut in 2009 and earn immense critical and public acclaim. Some of the popular productions hosted are Tina Turner musical Soul Sister and a revival of Cabaret. Currently, the blockbuster Dreamgirls is running with packed houses.

The Savoy Theatre is positioned on the Strand, which is a popular busy area for shopping. The venue is the abode of some of the popular theatres such as the Vaudeville and Adelphi. Some of the popular attractions such as Covent Garden, Leicester Square and the River Thames are located at a walking distance from the theatre. The popular Savoy Hotel is located at here with a health club and swimming pool situated on top of the theatre itself.

For those who are planning to visit the theatre, need not worry as theatre is located at an easily accessible location. You can visit the theatre by Tube, as the closest tube stations to the Savoy Theatre are Embankment and Charing Cross, located 2 minute walk down the Strand. You can also visit the by bus numbers 1, 4, 6, 9, 11, 13, 15, 23, 26, 59, 68, 76, 77a, 91, 168, 171, 172, 176, 188, 243, 341, 521 and RV1 all stop close to the theatre. You can hire a taxi or drive your own car, as the nearest car park is the Trafalgar Square Spring Gardens.
