Lyric Theatre

Year 1888 marked the debut of Lyric Theatre and is the oldest theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue. Immensely popular and award winning London musical, Thriller Live is running with packed houses at the Lyric Theatre since 2009. The theatre was mainly constructed for operatta and made its opening with the comic opera, Dorothy.

The venue is known for hosting various comic operas from 1916-1930 as well as operas and plays. The theatre underwent huge refurbishment and reopened in the year 1933. The theatre was reopened with George S Kaufman’s spectacular production, Royal Family, starring Sir Laurence Olivier. Under the superb direction of Noel Coward, the show was a complete mesmerizing experience.

In the year 1943, the ownership was taken over by Prince Littler and offered some of the finest comedies. The theatre also hosted some of the popular stage hit musicals such as Blood Brothers, Gigi and Cameron Mackintosh’s five-star production of Five Guys Named Moe. The latter ran for five years. Really Useful Group took the ownership of the venue in the year 2000, and went on hosting several Bill Kenwright productions. In the year 2005, Nimax in 2005 bought the theatre.

Lyric theatre is known for hosting some of the wide range of musicals and classic plays. The auditorium was Renaissance with occupancy of 967 seats. Some shows with limited performances are also hosted such as Showstopper! The Improvised Musical, and children’s shows such as What The Ladybird Heard and The Gruffalo’s Child.

The Lyric Theatre is located on one of the most popular London street known as Shaftesbury Avenue. This is also stated as one of the prime sites for theatre lovers in London. The venue has some of the popular neighbouring theatres such as the Apollo and the Lyric. Some of the finest lively bars and restaurants are located at a nearby distance, whereas Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus are located at a walking distance from the theatre!
